The #4 ranked ranked recruit coming out of his junior year in high school Nathan Szobota has retired from competitive swimming, Virginia confirmed on Friday. Szobota just began his sophomore year at Virginia and competed for the Cavaliers last season.
Originally from Richmond, Virginia, Szobota committed to Notre Dame as a junior in high school before flipping his commitment as a senior with plans to stay in-state and swim for Virginia. Szobota was the #4 ranked recruit coming out of his junior season and was an Honorable Mention ranked recruit coming out of his senior year, heading into his freshman season at Virginia.
Szobota competed for Virginia this past season and swam to a lifetime best 4:18.02 500 free at ACCs in prelims before swimming a 4:18.41 for 13th in the final. He also scored in the 1650 free as he touched in a 15:04.82 for 14th. Both of those times led the team this past season as Maximus Williamson was the 2nd fastest 500 freestyler with a 4:19.69 and Dillon Wright was the 2nd fastest 1650 freestyle with a 15:14.90.
He was a part of the top ranked recruiting class that also included top 20 ranked recruits #1 Thomas Heilman, #2 Maximus Williamson, and #12 Thomas Mercer.
The Virginia men finished 7th at the 2026 ACC Championships before going on to finish 9th at the 2026 NCAA Championships with 192 points.
