A mother has been charged with murder in the killing of her 2-year-old child, who was found unresponsive inside a Frankfort home, where the mother was also discovered attempting to harm herself.
Corie A. Walsh, 38, was charged with three counts of first-degree murder and is now in custody “and being held for medical treatment.”
Walsh was found inside her home Tuesday afternoon in the 22700 block of Brook Stone Court attempting to harm herself as police said they discovered her 2-year-old child unresponsive. The child later died at an area hospital and Walsh was transported for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Three other children inside the home were unharmed, police said.
A cause and manner of death for the child were still “pending” as of Friday morning, but the Will County Coroner’s office confirmed the death of the 2-year-old was “the result of an apparent homicide.”
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, their loved ones, and everyone affected by this heartbreaking tragedy,” Frankfort Police Chief Leanne Chelepis said in a release. “We ask our community to keep them in their thoughts and prayers and to respect their privacy as they navigate this profoundly difficult time.”
Frankfort Mayor Keith Ogle said he learned of the situation from a call from the city’s police chief.
“Everybody was in shock, and this is just a horrible thing in the community. I’m a father with two daughters who just had babies recently, and it’s very difficult for everybody here,” he told NBC Chicago.
Ogle acknowledged while the circumstances are “very difficult for the community,” he urged residents to withhold judgment until the facts of the case are released.
“I don’t want people to draw conclusions out of school on this,” he said. “Let the investigators get the information, get the facts. They’ll interview neighbors, other people that are involved, and we’ll get a complete picture, or as best as we can.”
Frankfort is approximately 36 miles south of Chicago.
