A longtime Pleasant Shade Community resident who possessed a keen sense of humor and was loved by all who knew her, Mrs. Sue Sloan Grisham, departed this earth to be with her two sons, husband and parents. At 89 years of age, she was pronounced deceased at 8:12 a.m. Thursday morning September 3, 2026 at White House Healthcare in White House, Tennessee where she resided.
Her pastor, Eld. Scott Rigsby, assisted by Eld. Gerald Ragland will officiate at the 11 a.m. Saturday morning September 5th funeral service from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. A grandson, Eric Allen, will deliver the eulogy. Interment will be in the Sloan-Grisham family lot at the Pleasant Shade Cemetery.
The Grisham family will receive friends on Friday September 4th from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Sanderson in Carthage and again on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the 11 a.m. services.
She was the only child of the late Pleasant Shade businessman, Oval Clayton Sloan who died at the age of 89 on November 5, 1993 and Pattye Louise Wilmore Sloan who died at the age of 96 on March 26, 2009.
Mrs. Grisham was a member of the 1955 graduating class at Smith County High School.
Majoring in the Future Homemakers of America, she was a cheerleader her freshman year, a member of the state F.H.A. chorus her sophomore, her junior year was a representative at the state F.H.A. convention, was in the Beta Club and played basketball, both her junior and senior year.
It was stated of her in the senior annual that “All things come to those who but will wait”.
On December 24, 1955 at her parent’s home in the Pleasant Shade Community, Rev. Ewing S. Weakley married Sue to her high school sweetheart, Elmwood Community native, Bobby Kenneth “Cotton” Grisham, who preceded her in death as a result of cancer on their forty-first wedding anniversary, December 24, 1996, at the age of 61.
Shortly before the death of her husband, on October 14, 1996, Sue and Cotton suffered the loss of a son, Bobby Keith Grisham who died unexpectedly of a heart attack at the age of 36. Then nine months and sixteen days later Sue again was confronted with the loss of a child when another son, Ronald Kevin Grisham was killed instantly in a truck wreck in Henderson, Kentucky on July 30, 1997. Kevin was just 38.
As a twelve-year-old girl, she was saved by God’s grace under the preaching of the late Courtland Wakefield, who was then pastor of the former Sanderson Presbyterian Church, located on Sanderson Branch in Pleasant Shade.
At the time of her death, she was a member and former piano player at the Pleasant Shade Upper Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Sue was so talented musically and enjoyed playing the piano.
She was a long-time former member of the Pleasant Shade Home Demonstration Club.
When the Cousinaires music group were formed she was the piano player for the quartet consisting of, Jack Dillehay, Robbie Swann, Joe Boze and Harold Halliburton.
She was a lady that was always active whether at home, church or the work place. She was first employed at Hartsville Garment Company, then Citizens Bank in Carthage and when her sister-in-law, Carolyn Grisham was Smith County Circuit Court Clerk, she worked in the clerk’s office. When Jim and Donna Porter owned the Sunshine Ice Cream Parlor, where the Sub-Way is now located, she was employed with them.
From 1985 until 2009 she was a clerk at the Best-Way Super Market, (now Sav-Way) in Carthage until 2009 when she was diagnosed with Idiopathic Mast Cell Activation Disorder. Since being diagnosed in 2009, she was prescribed 14 regular Bayer aspirins per day.
Surviving are two of her four children, a daughter Kristi Grisham Allen and husband John of Old Hickory; a son, Kyle Sloan Grisham of the Pleasant Shade Community; nine grandchildren,
Travis Grisham and wife Danielle of the Popes Hill Community, Brandon McGowan and wife Brooke of Southaven, Mississippi, Cherith Ing and husband Merrick of Milan, TN, Brian Grisham and wife Tara of Watertown, Blake Grisham of Carthage, Eric Allen and wife Layna of Nashville, Emily Allen of Nashville, Dustin Grisham of the Defeated Creek Community, and Marissa Carpenter and husband Criag of the Liberty Community in Dekalb County; fifteen great-grandchildren; Madison Jo Grisham, Bailey and Bryson Grisham, Cadence and Addie McGowan, Abby, Will, and Lane Grisham, Mikey Deburn, Wylie and Maxton Ing, Levi and Brantley Grisham, Carson and Eden Carpenter.
