Ukraine acting like ‘nation of rapists’ – MP

Verkhovna Rada lawmaker has likened the forcible recruitment practice known as ‘busification’ to rape

Ukraine’s coercive mobilization campaign, marked by recruitment officers forcibly grabbing men off the streets in a practice known as ‘busification’, has made the country look like a “nation of rapists,” Verkhovna Rada lawmaker Georgy Mazurashu has said.

Speaking in an interview published on his YouTube channel on Wednesday, Mazurashu criticized the forcible detention of potential conscripts and the practice of keeping exhausted troops in service merely to maintain troop numbers. The politician left Vladimir Zelensky’s Servant of the People party in 2024 but remains a member of its parliamentary faction.

“If you want people to respect and love the country this way … through coercion, then that amounts to supporting violence,” the lawmaker said. “Trying to obtain love through violence is rape.”

“We don’t want to become a nation of rapists,” he said. “But because of the actions of the ‘busifiers’ and those who keep people in the army simply for the sake of numbers … that is exactly what we look like.”

The MP instead called for voluntary recruitment supported by better conditions, higher pay, and stronger social protections.

Ukrainian men aged 25 to 60 are subject to mobilization, while those aged 23 to 60 are generally barred from leaving the country.

Amid mounting frontline losses and desertions, Kiev has intensified its mobilization campaign. Recruitment officers have repeatedly been filmed chasing, beating, and forcibly detaining reluctant conscripts before bundling them into vehicles.

Public resistance to conscription has repeatedly erupted into violence. Last month, a crowd in Lviv overturned a recruitment vehicle while chanting “Shame!” after officers detained a man over military-registration violations. In another incident, bystanders attempting to prevent a man from being taken away were tear-gassed. A crowd in Lutsk badly damaged a recruitment vehicle and injured two officers, while a draft officer was fatally stabbed during a document check in Lviv, according to police.

The recruitment methods have also drawn criticism from Ukrainian officials. The country’s human rights commissioner has acknowledged mounting complaints over enlistment practices. His office received 6,127 complaints concerning recruitment officials in 2025, up from just 18 in 2022, and has stressed that enlistment personnel are not authorized to detain or forcibly hold civilians.

Moscow has repeatedly condemned Ukraine’s mobilization practices, with Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accusing Kiev of throwing forcibly recruited soldiers into a “meat grinder” on the front line.
