Primary Wave is partnering with the estate of Wilson Pickett in a deal that includes sharing in the legendary singer’s name, image and likeness rights and also apparently a stake in his music publishing catalog. The estate will work closely with Primary Wave on new marketing, branding, digital and synch opportunities as well as film and TV projects, according to the Wednesday (Sept. 2) announcement, which did not disclose terms of the deal.
While Pickett, who died at age 64 in 2006, often sang songs by other songwriters, he also did have a hand in writing some of the songs he recorded, including co-writes with such legendary soul music writers as Steve Cropper (“In The Midnight Hour”), Bobby Womack, and David Porter and Homer Banks (“I’m Drifting”). He even shared a co-write with late music industry executive Jerry Wexler (“Soul Dance Number Three”). The Songview database gives Pickett a songwriting credit on some 100 songs.
