Chapel Hill authorities are asking community members to stay away from part of Eastwood Lake on Tuesday afternoon as search crews look for an elderly community member.
Chapel Hill Police officers and firefighters are searching the lake for an 85-year-old man reported missing. The senior citizen was last seen while swimming in the area this morning. A spokesperson for the police department told Chapelboro the man is not being publicly identified as of 2 p.m.
First responders are gathering at South Lakeshore Drive, which is closed to all traffic. The beach access along the lake’s shore is also closed as part of the emergency response.
The 48-acre Eastwood Lake and its accompanying park is privately owned and operated by the Lake Forest Association, and is open only to neighborhood residents and their guests. The association’s website warns that the lake is a “swim at your own risk” feature, since any Eastwood Lake staff are not trained or working as lifeguards. Anyone who swims is strongly encouraged to wear a life vest and practice water safety, says the organization’s guidelines.
Chapel Hill Police said more information will be publicly released as the search unfolds.
This is a developing story. More details will be added as they become available.
