According to the February 1989 issue of Spin magazine, Bell, who is an openly gay man, would occasionally introduce the song by saying, “When I was a little girl, I asked my mummy, ‘Can I be gay when I grow up?’ She replied, ‘Yes, if you show a little respect.'”
Erasure’s other big hit was “Chains of Love,” which reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was also released in 1988.

Clarke is currently 66. Bell is 62. When asked how their friendship has endured four decades, Bell told The Guardian, “Vince is a sweetheart. He makes out he’s really tough on the outside, and I know that he’s not. We just balance each other really well.” He added, “He’s been a great teacher. He was in the industry five years or more before I joined him. He’s taught me a lot about being sensible. As much as you can be.”
The pair is still making music to this day. According to their website, “Vince Clarke and Andy Bell are still working together as Erasure and have no plans for that to stop. Erasure are currently in the studio working on a new album, and Vince and Andy are involved in discussions about various possible touring scenarios to promote that release.”
