Grantchester star Robson Green has promised a fitting ending to the long-running crime drama Grantchester – promising a "stunning and emotional" goodbye.
It was confirmed in July this year that the 11th series of the ITV period drama will be its last, with Green's long-standing Detective Inspector Geordie Keating bidding farewell to his days as a detective.
At one point, writer Daisy Coulam admitted she was tempted to kill off Geordie in the final episodes before changing her mind and keeping him alive.
Speaking exclusively to Radio Times, Green laughed: "That’s f**king news to me!" before agreeing that Grantchester fans deserved a happy ending after 12 years on the screen.
"They [the audience] would’ve wanted a happy ending. Don't we all?" he said.
Sharing his thoughts on the decision to end the series, Green added: "It was just one of those things. It had to end at some time, so end it when everybody's happy making it – don't milk the money cow, and it was wonderful. It was very emotional."
"It's stunning. It's beautiful. It's really emotional. It's great," he said of the final episodes.
The series is already airing on Masterpiece in the US, though UK fans will have to wait a bit longer to see what unfolds – with speculation that the episodes will arrive in early 2027.
Green has remained the central DI Geordie throughout the series run, who his often joined on his investigations by the local vicar.
Over the course of the show, the vicars have been James Norton's Sidney Chambers, Tom Brittney's William Davenport, and finally Alphy Kottaram (Rishi Nair), who has been with him since series nine.
And as fate would have it, Green shared the sleuthing men-of-the-cloth had a fitting goodbye together after Grantchester wrapped... albeit an unplanned one at a dinner to mark the end of filming.
"We [the cast] are in Soho House. No word of a f**king lie, we're all there, me and the cast we’re like that [in a circle] and James walks in. James Norton, [and goes] 'Guys!” like… what the f**k?,'" Green laughed. "Then Tom Brittany later walks in!"
"[It was] 100% coincidence. 100%. It was just amazing. I never go to wrap parties!"
While Green is beloved as the detective on Grantchester, he's next on our screens in a far more sinister role... that of serial killer Patrick Harbottle in the return of Channel 5's The Game.
A sociopathic stalker by nature, Patrick finds his match in former Detective Huw Miller (Jason Watkins) who is determined to bring him down and deliver justice for those whose lives he's ruined.
But with the pair locked in a game of one-upmanship, only one can truly be the victor – just how far will each of them go to claim that title?
Grantchester series 1-10 are available to stream on ITVX in the UK. The Game returns on September 1 on 5.
