The No. 8 Alabama Crimson Tide soccer team beat the University of South Alabama 3-0 Sunday during a blisteringly hot game.
Alabama kept the pressure on for much of the first half with 12 shots, six of those being on goal. South Alabama was kept to two off-target shots in the first half.
“From the opening whistle, I thought we were the aggressor,” Head Coach Wes Hart said. “We did a better job this game than the previous game at looking more urgent to score goals and make things happen.”
Much of the first half was played on the Crimson Tide’s offensive half, keeping both teams moving.
It wasn’t until the 24th minute that Alabama broke through South Alabama’s defense and scored. Defender Maison Smith sent the ball to the back of the net off her left boot. This was Smith’s first goal of the season.
“It was such a great moment,” Smith said. “We had a lot of great moments leading up to it, and I think it was time that we put it in the back of the net.”
For the remainder of the half, Alabama continued keeping the pressure on South Alabama, sending three more shots at the goal.
In the second half, Alabama continued to keep the pressure in South Alabama’s defensive half with 15 shots until things started to heat up more for both teams.
In the 77th minute, forward Larkin Thomason and South Alabama defender Allison Carabin each received a yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct.
After three more Alabama shots, South Alabama defender MacKenzie Meyerer had a handball in the box in the 79th minute. After reviewing the play, the referee determined a penalty kick was earned.
South Alabama Head Coach Chris Hennessey received a yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct after the penalty was awarded.
Thomason stepped up to the penalty spot and scored another goal for the Crimson Tide, marking her fifth penalty scored of the season. This goal made Thomason the leader for the most penalties scored in a single season, with five earned penalties in just six games.
That wasn’t the end of the game for Thomason, who went up for a shot in the 80th minute. South Alabama’s goalkeeper Mackenzie Smith stopped the ball but did not hold onto it. Thomason took a stab at the rebound and shot the ball into the back of the net.
“This team is so full of light, and just being able to, like, them pour it into me and me pour it back into them just makes it fun,” Thomason said.
From there, South Alabama had three shots — to no avail — and the game ended 3-0.
Alabama celebrated the win with a line dance that Thomason said players had “been practicing the past few days in the locker room.”
The Crimson Tide will be back in action Thursday at home against Samford. The game is set to start at 7 p.m. CT.
