Nine law enforcement officers were placed on administrative leave in connection with the fatal shooting of a security guard in Gary, Indiana, authorities said.
Indiana State Police said at around 10:54 p.m. on Friday, officers with the Gary Police Department and Lake County Sheriff’s Department responded to the metro station at Broadway and 4th Avenue in Gary for a report of an armed security officer exhibiting erratic behavior.
Officers tried to de-escalate the situation, but a confrontation occurred between the suspect and law enforcement, leading to shots being fired. The individual was pronounced dead at the scene.
He was identified as Kenneth Williams, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
An initial investigation revealed six Gary police officers and three Lake County sheriff’s officers discharged their weapons. All nine officers were placed on leave in accordance with agency policies.
State police detectives are continuing to investigate the incident.
