ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Highland Hospital brought together doulas and the maternity care team for education and networking to celebrate Doula Day.
The event featured an educational session on maternal mental health, a live simulation of an obstetric emergency response and support for doulas enrolling in Medicaid. Participants say the partnership between the provider and the doula makes all the difference.
“Doulas are really important in improving outcomes for moms and babies. We in this country have made all sorts of medical progress, but we haven’t improved that. And the partnership between doulas and health providers is really important,” said Eva Pressman, chair of obstetrics and gynecology at URochester. “It is a way of making sure we know what’s going on in the lives of our patients.”
A doula is someone who provides physical, emotional and informational support before, during and after birth.
