ROCHESTER, N.Y. — ROC Against Cancer took over MLK Memorial Park on Saturday, aiming to bring the community together with health resources, education, and empowerment.
The event began at 10 a.m. and will finish at 3 p.m. The event featured face painting, a Rochester Fire Department truck, a coloring station for kids, yoga and Zumba, Foodlink Mobile Pantry, drinks, on-site breast, lung, and colon cancer screenings from URochester, inflatable lungs and colon teaching tools, and more.
“So today, we have our first-ever ROC Against Cancer event. It is a collaboration between Wilmot Cancer Institute, Common Ground Health, Ibero-American Action League, and Urban League of Rochester, and we are bringing together resources all about cancer care from prevention through survivorship,” said Sarah Merritt, senior regional outreach manager at Wilmot Cancer Institute.
She said that about 30 different vendors were at the event, aiming to promote health.
“There’s still are pockets here in our own city that fall so short of the screening rates, and why is that? It’s an access issue. People don’t know where to go to get screened. They can’t get there anyways, there’s childcare barriers, there’s so many different barriers. So we are bringing everything together under one place so we can have access and begin to start the process of knowing where to go to navigate this care,” Merritt explained.
According to the institute, Rochester has higher rates of cancer compared to state and national averages.
