Spanish distance runner Enric Casacuberta will have the chance to see many classic American landmarks over the next several weeks as he runs the length of Route 99.
Speaking to NBC Chicago through a translator, Casacuberta shared that his journey is about much more than bragging rights. It’s to honor his two friends who died from ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
He’ll be raising awareness and money for ALS research during his nearly 2,500-mile journey.
Enric will run between 25 and 35 kilometers (about 15 to 22 miles) a day, depending on conditions and how he’s feeling.
“Enric, your dedication reminds us that while the road ahead may be long, no one walks or in your case runs alone,” said 42nd Ward Ald. Brendan Reilly, who saw Enric off from Navy Pier on Saturday morning.
Route 66 is usually a classic American car trip. But for Enric, it will be the equivalent of 93 marathons. He expects the journey will take about 150 days.
U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley was also there to wish Enric well. He led bipartisan efforts in Washington to pass legislation to improve treatment access for those living with neurodegenerative diseases. The Act for ALS was recently reauthorized for another five years.
“To see someone make such an extraordinary effort and commitment provides me hope that we can accomplish great things,” Quigley said.
Enric hopes people from all over the country will watch and support his journey.
“I want them to know that when somebody wants to do something, you train, you prepare, and you can get it done,” he said.
