The Basque coach took over the club in December 2019 and, after navigating some turbulent times during his first few years, he is about to reach a momentous milestone that only nine other managers have hit before.
While it’s by no means unheard of for managers to preside over 250 Premier League matches, doing so at a single club is a different matter.
What makes Arteta’s longevity even more impressive is the fact it’s come in an era more associated with impatience than long-term faith. Time is money in modern football, and clubs are more willing than ever to make snap decisions if a slump in form rears its head.
Similarly, Arteta’s reign has come at one of the biggest clubs in the world. Such teams might typically be most associated with a win-now mentality, but Arsenal allowed Arteta the space and authority to put his own stamp on things – and their trust was repaid last season with a first Premier League title success in 22 years.
Their glory in 2025-26 saw them finally cross a line they’d tiptoed around for a while. For several seasons they’d shown Arteta had taken them to another level, with a run of three successive second-place finishes coming after six consecutive seasons outside the top four. And Premier League success showed they had the bottle to finally hush their critics and the doubters.
As such, Arteta reaches 250 Premier League games in charge of Arsenal while they are looking to establish something of a dynasty.
With practically all of the Premier League’s other superpowers seemingly contending with some form of uncertainty this season, Arsenal could make the most of the power vacuum behind them and position themselves firmly at the top of the pile in English football.
In that sense, Arteta’s longevity must be considered an advantage for Arsenal when the uncertainty surrounding their rivals largely reflects the considerable manager turnover seen in the Premier League this year.
It also shouldn’t be taken for granted. As noted, Arteta will become just the 10th manager in Premier League history to reach 250 matches at a single club, and the first since 2023.
In February 2023, Pep Guardiola presided over his 250th Premier League game in charge of Manchester City. The year before, Jürgen Klopp (Liverpool) and Sean Dyche (Burnley) also passed that milestone.
The other managers to make it to 250 Premier League matches in charge of one club are Alex Ferguson (Manchester United), Arsène Wenger (Arsenal), David Moyes (Everton), Joe Kinnear (Wimbledon), Harry Redknapp (West Ham) and Alan Curbishley (Charlton Athletic).
Of that group, only Guardiola (70.8%), Ferguson (65.2%) and Klopp (62.6%) have a higher win than Arteta’s 60.2% (W150 D48 L51) ahead of Monday’s trip to Villa Park.
While reaching 250 Premier League matches is undoubtedly a fine achievement for Arteta, it’s by no means outside the realm of possibility that he’s only just getting started.
