We’ve been treading the perpetually swamped corridors of Holby City’s emergency department for 40 years, and now - in two cinematic instalments that celebrate Casualty's milestone anniversary - the hospital’s medics face their biggest challenge yet.
A peaceful day off for clinical lead Flynn Byron (Olly Rix) takes a sour turn when he witnesses an explosion tearing through neighbouring St. James’s infirmary. Plans to spend time with his family are abandoned, and he rushes off to the scene of the disaster.
Our Holby heroes are horrified to realise that they’re the only professionals in the county that can deal with the fall out, and while senior consultant Dylan Keogh (William Beck) navigates his colleagues through another hellish Saturday night shift, a personal tragedy will see the floor fall from beneath his feet.
As patients flood in through the doors of the ED, Flynn and Stevie Nash (Elinor Lawless) jump into an ambulance on a ‘shout’ - which results in them taking an icy plunge beneath the waters of a flooded quarry.
Hold onto your seats, Casualty isn’t letting this celebration pass by quietly, and the cast have told Radio Times how the forthcoming anniversary episodes are a "clear statement" to show how the continuing drama is "developing and evolving."
View Green Video on the source websiteHaving been involved in the centrepiece stunt of the 40th, which was filmed at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, Rix commented: "I think the 40th has a lovely way of sort of referencing and acknowledging where it's come from, whilst at the same time having you know a clear statement that we're looking to the future now, and the show is kind of changing for the better.
"I think to sort of be part of that is quite a humbling, lovely and exciting experience because we're aware that it's changing. We're aware that it's moving into a new territory, and that's what you want as an actor - to be developing and evolving."
He added: "You don't get to 40 years on TV if you just keep doing the same thing. So I think this show sort of encapsulates that energy quite nicely."
Co-star Melanie Hill, who plays Siobhan McKenzie, branded the instalments "epic".
"I don't know how we pulled it off, to be honest," she laughed, "it's mega!"
"If people think that they know Casualty, tune in - because this is next level. It's Casualty as you've never seen it before."
In agreement, longest-serving current cast member Beck said: "It's rare that somebody comes and joins as a viewer, because this show's already 40 years old. This is a show that has regenerated and reconnected with its audience. It not only listens to their audience, but leads their audience.
"If we're capable of doing that for another 40 years, then I may still be here."
Casualty returns on Saturday 5 September on BBC One at 8pm.
