BATH, N.Y. — Steuben County Public Health says it is investigating two more confirmed cases of measles, bringing the total number of cases to four within the county.
The department says the cases were in two unvaccinated residents. One of the cases was a contact to a previously reported case.
The county was first notified of the positive results late Thursday and Friday, the department says. They say one of the residents started showing symptoms on Aug. 23, and the other person did the next day.
The other two cases in the county
The other two people who tested positive for measles were also unvaccinated, the department says. The first person started showing symptoms on Aug. 13, and the other person started showing symptoms the next day.
Other confirmed cases
Steuben is not the only county in the region with confirmed cases. Just last week, health leaders in Seneca County confirmed two more cases in the county, and two presumed positive cases.

Just before that, Seneca County confirmed another positive case in an unvaccinated resident in the county who recently traveled from Pennsylvania.

There have also been two cases in both Erie and Allegany Counties.

Symptoms of measles
Measles typically starts with a high fever, cough, and runny nose. After two or three days, tiny white spots (Koplik spots) may appear inside the mouth. A measles rash might appear three to five days after the first symptoms. It usually begins as flat red spots that appear on the face at the hairline. If you’re vaccinated, the symptoms tend to be milder.
Protecting yourself against measles
Dr. Russo says you’re 95% protected against measles if you were born before 1957, have already had measles, or are fully vaccinated.
