Every comedian’s dream job comes with an audition process that can stretch on for months, and Saturday Night Live‘s is no exception. The classic sketch show has reportedly wrapped its final round of Season 52 showcases and is now sending a shortlist of comedians to screen test for a spot on the cast.
SNL held its fifth and final showcase in mid-August, following stops in Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York over the summer. Names that reportedly stood out from those early rounds include Trent Mason, Kaba Hues, Chase Rosenberg, and April Rock from the Los Angeles showcase, Peyton Ruddy from Chicago, and Joey Welsh, Allisha Edwards, Amber Singletary, and Saidah Belo-Osagie from New York.

A follow-up report has since narrowed that group further. Mason and Belo-Osagie are said to be moving on to screen tests, joined by Claire Riffle, Grace Reiter, Devin Bockrath, Olivia Puckett, Ismael Loutfi, Rachel Coster, Russell Daniels, and Ana Fabrega, the Los Espookys co-creator known for her surreal, character-driven comedy. Screen tests mark the traditional next-to-last step in SNL’s audition pipeline, typically performed in front of Lorne Michaels and other producers before any final hiring decisions are made.
This year’s search carries a bit more weight than usual, since Chloe Fineman became the first Season 51 cast member to confirm she is leaving the show, announcing her exit on Instagram in July after seven seasons. With most SNL contracts expiring August 1, there has been speculation that more departures could follow before the new season locks its lineup, though nothing has been confirmed beyond Fineman’s exit as of this report.
Timing-wise, the stakes are higher too. Season 52 is expected to premiere on September 26, which would make it SNL’s earliest debut since 2012, giving Michaels and his team a tighter runway to finalize a cast than in recent years. A finalized lineup typically isn’t announced until closer to the premiere, so any names currently screen testing are not guaranteed a spot, and plenty of contenders from past showcases have gone on to write for the show instead of joining the cast.
Fans hoping for hints will likely be watching for scattered reports as auditions continue, but for now, the list of screen-test hopefuls is the closest look yet at who might be filling out Studio 8H’s newest featured-player class this fall.
