A story too eerie for its own author to fully explain is finally coming to the screen. Prime Video has greenlit a six-part limited series based on Stephen King‘s “Crouch End,” the horror master’s only story set in London and one of his most overtly Lovecraftian works. For longtime King readers, it’s a deep cut finally getting its due.
“Crouch End” first appeared in the 1980 anthology “New Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos” before King folded it into his 1993 collection “Nightmares & Dreamscapes.” Named for the real North London neighborhood where it unfolds, the story centers on two police officers working a night shift who recount the strange disappearance of an American tourist’s husband. The series keeps that mystery intact with the synopsis simply saying “London never sleeps deeply, and its dreams are uneasy.” When global movie star Doris Freeman bursts into a police station claiming strange phenomena are behind her husband’s disappearance, inspector Ted Vetter has to determine whether she’s telling the truth, hiding something darker, or caught up in a mystery far stranger than either.
Paul Tomalin, known for “Bodies” and “Torchwood,” is writing the adaptation, while Tom Shankland, whose credits include “House of Guinness” and “The Leopard,” directs. Mammoth Screen and Fifth Season are producing, and the project marks the first King adaptation ever filmed in the UK. “I’ve been a Stephen King super-fan forever,” Shankland said in a statement. “The chance to work with this great team and bring his utterly brilliant London mystery to life is beyond exciting.”

Tomalin, who is also an executive producer alongside Shankland, Damien Timmer, Rebecca Keane and Ben Irving, said the story has stuck with him for years. “Stephen King’s vivid prose has haunted my nightmares ever since,” he said. Nicole Clemens, VP of International Originals at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, called King “one of the defining storytellers of our time,” adding that the series will “grip audiences worldwide with its visceral crime thriller and supernatural mystery.”
Casting hasn’t been announced yet, though Variety reports interest is already building around the project. The show joins a growing wave of King material in production, including the streamer’s upcoming “Carrie” series from Mike Flanagan and HBO Max’s “IT: Welcome to Derry.”
