Lunar eclipse: Time-lapse of the moon, viewer photos, and reaction at RIT observatory

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Did you stay up to see the partial lunar eclipse overnight? News10NBC’s photojournalist captured a time-lapse of the Earth moving between the sun and the moon.

The eclipse reached over 90% of its peak, with the Earth’s shadow casting on the moon’s surface and giving the moon a red tint. The eclipse began at 10:33 p.m. on Thursday and reached its peak at 12:12 a.m. Here’s the time-lapse:

Over 100 people came out to an eclipse viewing party at the Rochester Institute of Technology’s observatory. Thankfully, it wasn’t too cloudy to get a good view.

“I love just seeing how the world works. It’s like a once-in-a-lifetime thing, even though it’s really not. But I love that it’s just like, you’re going to see this like every 10 years. You can’t see it all the time. I think it’s amazing,” one eclipse viewer said.

“I went into the observatory for a bit. And when we went in there, the clouds were just barely letting us see the full bit of the moon. I looked into the telescope. I got such a beautiful view of the lunar eclipse as it was happening,” another viewer said.

The next lunar eclipse that will be visible in New York State will be on Feb. 20. That will be a penumbral lunar eclipse, which happens when the moon moves through the faint outer part of the Earth’s shadow, called the penumbra.
