ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Bhutanese Community of Greater Rochester is collecting donations to support relief efforts in the flooding along the Nepal-China border as the death toll continues to rise.
Nepal says the country’s death toll has risen to 469 as rescuers recover more bodies amid the debris. China has not updated its report of three deaths in Tibet. Together, the two countries have said that more than 1,500 people are missing near the Himalaya mountain range.
In a post, the community group says this is a difficult time for Nepali-speaking communities across Rochester. The group is collecting donations of food and essentials at two locations in Rochester:
Busters Market on 3892 Scottsville Rd. All In One Unit on 476 State St. Nepali Mart on 2018 Scottsville-West Henrietta Rd.You can also donate to an online fundraiser that the group posted on its Facebook page. In one post, the Bhutanese Community of Greater Rochester wrote:
“Our hearts are with the people of Nepal during this devastating time. We mourn the lives lost in the recent floods and keep in our prayers those who are still missing, the families waiting for news, and the rescue teams working tirelessly to save lives. May God bring comfort to grieving families, strength to those affected, and protection to everyone involved in the rescue and recovery efforts. From our Bhutanese-Nepali community here in Greater Rochester, we stand together with Nepal in prayer, hope and solidarity.”
Bhutan is along the eastern Himalaya mountains and shares a border with Tibet.
