The US military has cleared Iraniansea mines from shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz, reopening the strategicwaterway to free transit while about 50,000 US troops enforce a blockade onIran, US Central Command (CENTCOM) Commander Adm. Brad Cooper announced onFriday.
Nearly 1,500 vessels carryingroughly 750 million barrels of crude oil have transited the waterway under USprotection in recent months, Cooper noted, with more than 20 warships andhundreds of aircraft taking part in the operations.
He said the blockade has preventedIran from shipping oil through its ports since mid-July, maintaining that noships had entered or left an Iranian port without US permission except onhumanitarian grounds. US forces also turned back 75 vessels attempting to breachthe blockade and disabled three others.
