GTA 6 extended look - Who needs real life anyway?

After a week of leaks that threatened to steal the show, Rockstar effortlessly brushed it all aside with the brilliantly directed extended look at Grand Theft Auto 6.

It’s hard to know where to even begin; other than that, GTA 6 looks absolutely bonkers, with an unprecedented level of detail and granularity, almost bordering on a life-sim. No doubt, GTA 6 pre-orders will have skyrocketed after the showing.

The graphics are absolutely stunning, with interior and exterior shots both displaying truly mind-boggling fidelity.

Whilst Cyberpunk 2077 might look objectively better in many regards, the level of cohesiveness and interactivity in Grand Theft Auto 6 is well beyond anything we’ve seen.

All this running on a base PlayStation 5? It’s borderline witchcraft, or just the result of seemingly endless time and budget.

That said, you can absolutely see where more powerful hardware such as the PS5 Pro will make a difference, such as with shadows, ambient occlusion and reflection quality, which looked a little grainy and ghosty at times, though there was something reassuringly real about it.

We can only imagine how gobsmackingly good the PC version will look.

Combat looks to be more Max Payne 3 than Grand Theft Auto 5, which is a massive improvement. This extends from the shooting to the slow-mo finishers.

The impact of bullets is keenly felt by NPCs, with the venerable Euphoria physics engine making shootouts grisly and believable.

Whilst in the extended look, Jason is only shown to do this, both protagonists can fill up a meter which allows them to slow down time (again, à la Max Payne or Red Dead Deadeye), and have hotspots highlighted on enemies like an X-ray. This might come in useful for disarming enemies, rather than outright killing them, something that will be far more consequential than in prior GTA games, as an honour system is present.

Jason and Lucia can don disguises, which may go some way to keeping your Honour level high, whilst still getting to rob every shop in town.

Though Jason and Lucia take centre stage, there are a dizzying number of characters who show up in the extended look, all of whom are rendered in almost impossible detail. Even random NPCs make characters in games such as Starfield look thoroughly last-gen.

Hair rendering is industry-leading, with individual strands flowing realistically as characters move, adding a level of dynamism that we don’t think most of us realised was missing until we saw it in action.

A nightclub scene is packed full of these beautifully realised NPCs, though the framerate does appear to struggle at times.

Speaking of our protagonists, Jason and Lucia have great chemistry, and really come off as a believable couple, holding hands at opportune moments. No doubt, this Bonnie and Clyde story will be one of the greatest tragedies in gaming.

As revealed in the Dazed interview, there are slick dynamic transitions between Jason and Lucia, but there are also GTA 5-styled aerial cutaway transitions that will zoom back down onto Jason or Lucia doing any number of activities, such as scuba diving, kayaking and more.

Racing is also making a return, with far more types of races, including actual racetracks of the asphalt and dirt-bike track varieties.

Whilst Vice City got most of the airtime, we did get some glimpses of the wider game map, including some beautifully muggy-looking swamps and run-down, forgotten corners of Leonida, the kind of place Ethel Cain would sing about.

Though Vice City is nigh-unrecognisable since we last visited it in the 80s, there were some landmarks, such as the design of the bridges between islands.

One new addition is a metro system, which made a brief appearance in a montage of different shots. It wasn’t clear how much this extends around the city, but the real-life Miami Metrorail is fairly expansive, connecting the airport to the city.

The trailers revealed just how much social media would be integrated into GTA 6, and the extended look goes into much more detail, with one encounter with an NPC seeing them doing the “trunk challenge”, where he has locked himself in the trunk of a car that Lucia has stolen.

This, of course, is all being relayed to his stream, and he asks his chat what he should do.

In an ensuing police pursuit, the streamer continues, with little regard for his safety.

During cutscenes, Jason and Lucia can text one another too, like when they’re separated from one another and need to maintain silence. This is demonstrated after Jason and Lucia, acting as a security detail for some sort of tech-bro and his sycophantic enablers, are separated, and ne’erdowells descend upon the party and start shooting.

These texts appear in the space around them and show the others' replies when the cutscene cuts between the two in a way that feels natural, and not at all as if Rockstar is forcing a gimmick onto the player.

We didn’t get much of a look at how Jason or Lucia will actually interact with their phones in-game, which have been a staple since GTA 4. Perhaps we’ll get a Snapmatic inviting us to go bowling?

Really, there’s too much to include in an article.

Seeing is believing, after all, and as soon as you can, you should absolutely watch the Grand Theft Auto 6 extended look.
