NEWARK, N.Y. — The man accused of pointing a gun at a Wayne County sheriff’s deputy Aug. 23 near the Newark Police Department — prompting the deputy to fire his own gun — has been identified.
Larry H. Barlow, 41, of Newark has been arrested following an investigation into the officer-involved shooting, in which neither Barlow nor the deputy were injured. Barlow was charged with menacing, criminal possession of a weapon and obstruction of governmental administration. He was arraigned Tuesday in Wayne County CAP Court.
According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Barlow exited the lobby of the police department and pointed what appeared to be a handgun toward the deputy and refused to comply with orders to drop the weapon, which turned out to be a BB gun. The Sheriff’s Office earlier reported that an intoxicated man had entered the Police Department lobby just before 5:30 p.m. with a pistol, complained about a prior incident involving Newark Police, held the gun to his own head and left the station, encountering the deputy in the parking lot. After the deputy fired, Barlow dropped the weapon, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The deputy has been placed on administrative leave pending the completion of an administrative review.
