The make-up of Donald Trump‘s inner circle has come under scrutiny after US senator Jon Ossoff remarked on the US President’s close relationship with his executive assistant, Natalie Harp.

The White House fired back at his comments about Trump simply wanting to “travel with Natalie“, calling Harp, 35, “one of the most loyal and hardest-working aides on President Trump’s team”.

The clash highlighted how Trump has surrounded himself with young, perfectly groomed Maga women in the White House, with the President regularly referring to their good looks and admiring their spirited defences of his policies.

Harp has reportedly taken on a role as the 80-year-old’s “comfort blanket” and “gatekeeper”, who leaves him adoring notes telling him “I want to bring you joy”. But he is also regularly flanked by the likes of “White House influencer” Margo Martin, 30, and deputy press secretary Anna Kelly, a 29-year-old former beauty queen.

The First Lady, Melania Trump, made a poised appearance in the days that followed Ossoff’s comments about Harp, indicating that she was unconcerned by the rumour mill. But as with Trump’s deeply loyal cabinet – both men and women – his youthful aides are raising genuine concern because of the part they play as enablers, whose sycophantic behaviour could help to legitimise the President’s most extreme actions.

Karoline Leavitt

Karoline Leavitt, 28, has been perhaps the most prominent of these women as White House press secretary and Trump’s most public defender. She recently announced she would step down at the end of August to focus on her family, but she will rejoin the pro-Trump super PAC Maga Inc. as a top outside adviser.

Leavitt, who has served as press secretary since the beginning of Trump’s second term in January 2025, became the youngest person to ever hold the position at 27. She is known for her combative style and quick thinking – with some describing her as Trump’s “attack dog” – as well as for pushing false claims, including a notorious one about USAID using taxpayer money to fund $50m-worth of condoms in Gaza.

And her political ambitions may just be beginning. Announcing her departure on Truth Social, the President said that she would remain one of his “top advisers, and an influential voice within the Republican Party”. Before serving in the White House, Leavitt was the Republican nominee for the US House of Representatives in New Hampshire’s 1st congressional district in 2022, with Trump giving his enthusiastic endorsement.

Trump has said she is “one of the best” presidential press secretaries in history, and described her as one of his “most trusted aides”. She has repeatedly criticised “liberal media”, trolled journalists, and would often open press briefings with hyperbolic monologues praising her boss. “She’s become a star,” Trump said last year. “It’s that face, it’s that brain, it’s those lips – the way they move, they move like she’s a machine gun.”

Margo Martin

Margo Martin, communications adviser and special assistant to Trump, has been tipped as a possible replacement for Leavitt.

Leavitt said in an interview that the 30-year-old “has the trust of the President,” and “she’s able to really see the inner workings of his every day and share that with the American public”.

Martin, who has become the President’s leading content creator, has been called the “first White House influencer”. Like Harp, she is never far from Trump’s side, posting photo dumps and reels from Air Force One, international visits and high-level summits, including video from Trump’s Alaska summit with Vladimir Putin, which was criticised by Azza Cohen, Kamala Harris’ official White House videographer, for “whitewashing and sanitising”.

At a campaign rally, Trump called her “the most beautiful photographer in the world”.

Martin grew up in Oklahoma and was the President’s press assistant during his first term. She also served as deputy director of communications for his Save America PAC. More than 300 high-profile right-wing influencers and politicians, including Elon Musk, the Republican National Committee and Fox News, have mentioned Martin since the inauguration in January 2025, sharing her posts thousands of times, according to analysis by The Washington Post.

Anna Kelly

Anna Kelly is also in the running to replace the outgoing Leavitt, who she has worked under as White House deputy press secretary. The 29-year-old is a former beauty queen with a Masters in political management, and was previously the national press secretary for the Republican National Committee.

Kelly was raised in Fairfax, Virginia, by parents who were “politically outspoken”. She began working as a campaign intern for a local Virginia Republican committee when she was in her mid-teens, before working as communication director for Republican Representative Derrick Van Orden of Wisconsin.

She is a Trump loyalist and has followed Leavitt in attacking journalists – branding The Hill’s White House correspondent Niall Stanage a “left-wing opinion writer hack” – and is quick to label “fake news”.

During a recent interview on The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show, Kelly described “winning every single day” at the White House and “having so much fun” working with the US President.

Kate Andersen Brower, the author of The Confidantes, a forthcoming book on women who have served as personal secretaries to US presidents, told the Financial Times that Trump “uses these younger women in his orbit as people who will really make him feel better.”

Natalie Harp

Harp has been dismissively nicknamed Trump’s “human printer” because of her habit of carrying a portable printer around with which to print out news articles and social media posts for her boss. But she has far more power than that, and is trusted with typing out his Truth Social posts, among other logistical responsibilities.

Harp had an unusual path to the White House. She grew up in a conservative Christian family in California, and after attending Point Loma Nazarene University in southern California, she received an MBA from Liberty University, a Christian university in Virginia.

She has long been infatuated with Trump – and credits him with saving her life. When Trump entered the White House in 2017, she was diagnosed with bone cancer. During his first term, he enacted a law to facilitate government approval of experimental drugs, which she then used to treat her cancer.

She rose to prominence within the Maga movement by talking about her experience and was invited to speak at the 2020 Republican National Convention. “When I failed the chemotherapies that were on the market, no-one wanted me in their clinical trials,” she said at the convention. “They didn’t give me the right to try experimental treatments. Mr President, you did, and without you, I’d have died waiting for them to be approved.”

Harp went on to host a show at the conservative One America News Network, or OAN – where she promoted false claims that Trump won the 2020 election – before joining his presidential campaign in 2022.

Her brother, Preston Harp, told CNN that her “dream came true” when she got the job at the White House and that his sister was Trump’s “biggest fan, so that’s probably why he likes her”.

“She thinks that he saved her life, so somebody living with that kind of gratitude must feel pretty good,” he added. “Trump is like everything that my mom taught us to respect.

“So I think that’s where her infatuation for Trump comes from, honestly.

“My mom raised us with the idea that American exceptionalism was the correct way of looking at things. That the United States is the boss of the world. My sister, unfortunately, didn’t break out of that delusion.”

The President and Harp have a very close working relationship. Reporters Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan wrote in their book Regime Change that Trump told staff that she “was the only one who loved him as much as his wife and kids”.

She reportedly left him notes saying, “you are all that matters to me” and, “I want to bring you joy”.

Ossoff made his comments after it emerged that Harp was one of the few aides who went with the President when he secretly switched planes after a Nato summit in Turkey last month, because of a possible Iranian threat.

“I’ve heard [Harp] referred to as his security blanket,” the senator, a Democratic rising star, said on MS Now when asked about why he name-checked her. “And I think we could say that about any number of the senior aides in the White House. They’re not telling him what he needs to hear.”
