Sky has confirmed a future for its atmospheric crime drama Under Salt Marsh, with it now being confirmed that a second chapter of the series from creator, writer and director Claire Oakley has been ordered.
However, the follow-up comes with a notable change of direction – Rafe Spall's Detective Eric Bull is leaving Wales behind for a remote Scottish mining village.
The six-part second season actually doesn't have a title yet but will see Spall return as the enigmatic Detective Eric Bull. Rather than picking up in the fictional Welsh town of Morfa Halen, the new story relocates the character entirely.
According to Sky, the second season follows the events of the first as Bull "moves to a remote Scottish mining village sinking under the weight of its own secrets, where a murder investigation brings him closer to the truth about his own past." The commission means a fresh community and a new mystery, while keeping Bull at the centre of the drama.
The first season proved a significant hit for Sky, launching in January of this year to critical acclaim while becoming the biggest Sky Original drama launch since The Day of the Jackal. Under Salt Marsh also became Sky's biggest entertainment title of the year to date, drawing a 28-day audience of 2.5 million.
That opening run starred Kelly Reilly, best known for Yellowstone, as former detective Jackie Ellis alongside Spall, with the story centring on the discovery of a student's body during an approaching storm and its links to an older unsolved case involving Jackie's missing niece. The supporting cast included Jonathan Pryce, Harry Lawtey and Brian Gleeson.

She added: "Rafe Spall brought Eric Bull's idiosyncrasies to life so brilliantly in the first series that taking his character onwards is an absolute pleasure. And I'm delighted to be continuing the partnership with Little Door and Sky."
Meghan Lyvers, managing director of scripted originals at Sky, said the drama "deeply connected with our audiences", describing Oakley as "an exceptional storyteller, with a remarkable ability to create richly drawn characters and a powerful sense of place". She praised Spall for bringing "such complexity and humanity to Bull in the first series".
Elwen Rowlands, executive producer and CEO of Little Door, said the team was "incredibly proud" to be returning, promising a story that "introduces an engaging new community and mystery, while expanding the emotional and cinematic world that made the first series so special".
Oakley writes the new season alongside In-Sook Chappell, Jonathan Harbottle and Scott Graham, with Zoranna Piggott as series producer. Rowlands and Oakley executive produce for Little Door, with Megan Spanjian for Sky.
Filming is set to begin in Scotland in 2027, with all those further exciting plot, cast and release details to come in due course.
