Moe Tucker, the drummer who helped shape the sound of The Velvet Underground, turns 82 on Aug. 26, 2026.
Born Maureen Ann Tucker on Aug. 26, 1944, in Queens, New York, Tucker grew up on Long Island and developed an early love of rock and roll. She eventually began playing drums and was working as a key-punch operator for IBM when an unexpected opportunity changed the course of her life.
In 1965, Tucker was recruited to join The Velvet Underground after the band’s original drummer, Angus MacLise, left. Guitarist Sterling Morrison knew Tucker through her brother, Jim, and remembered that she played drums.
Tucker quickly became an important part of the group.
Unlike many drummers, she often played standing up, using a stripped-down kit and a distinctive, primal style. Her approach became an integral part of The Velvet Underground’s sound.
Tucker also occasionally stepped out from behind the drums to sing. She provided lead vocals on “After Hours” and “The Murder Mystery” from 1969’s The Velvet Underground, as well as “I’m Sticking With You,” which was recorded during the band’s early years and later released on the 1985 compilation VU.
The Velvet Underground’s commercial success during its original run was modest, but the band’s influence grew dramatically over the decades. Its work with Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, Tucker and Nico became hugely influential on punk, alternative and experimental rock.
Tucker left the group in 1970 while pregnant, and she later pursued a solo career, releasing albums including Life in Exile After Abdication and I Spent a Week There the Other Night.
She was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Velvet Underground in 1996.
