ROCHESTER, N.Y. — “Spring forward, fall back.” Many people grew up hearing that phrase as a reminder to change clocks twice a year. Despite a recent push from President Donald Trump and lawmakers to make daylight saving time permanent, the legislation has not yet become law.

News10NBC viewer Shawna asked for clarification on where the legislation stands and whether clocks will still change this year, as we head into the fall season. She says: “I am writing to inquire if there are any updates regarding the daylight saving time schedule for this year. Following the passage of the recent bill, could you clarify whether we will still be turning the clocks back, or if we will remain on the current time permanently?”
As of today, the Sunshine Protection Act has only passed the House of Representatives. It has not yet been put to a vote in the Senate, and there are no votes scheduled. A big argument against the legislation is darker mornings in the winter. In the Greater Rochester area, the sun would rise as late as 8:30 in the morning during the winter months. That would also mean later sunsets.
As it stands right now, on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 2 a.m., clocks will fall back, giving us another hour of sleep, ending daylight saving time and returning to standard time. The Senate comes back from recess in mid-September. News10NBC will continue monitoring the schedule to see if it goes to a vote.
