Geneva becomes latest municipality to ban e-bikes on sidewalks, amid safety concerns

GENEVA, N.Y. — The City of Geneva is the latest municipality in the region to ban motorized vehicles on sidewalks and ban people under 16 from riding e-bikes or e-scooters.

Geneva City Council unanimously passed the rule, following concerns about motorized vehicle safety. Emergency rooms nationwide have seen a 671% increase in children and teens being injured while riding e-bikes and e-scooters since 2023, according to Truveta, a health data and analytics firm.

Under the new law, e-bikes and e-scooters are also banned from roads with posted speed limits above 30 miles per hour. In addition, the vehicles aren’t allowed to exceed 20 miles per hour. Council Member James Petropoulos says the rules won’t punish responsible riders.

“At the Colt Street barbecue, there were two individuals, one young, one old, driving incredibly irresponsibly, right down the sidewalk, with kids on the block playing on that sidewalk who had to dodge out of the way. That’s what we’re targeting,” he said.

Rochester and Ogden have passed similar laws, and Pittsford is also considering motorized vehicle legislation. Under New York State law, e-bikes and e-scooters are restricted from sidewalks unless municipalities decide otherwise.
