The Smith County Lady Owls Soccer is back, and on a mission. Last season they made program history by being in the Elite 8 at the State Tournament. This team is hungry for more of that. They have set their standards higher and deemed this hunting season. If the first two games are indicators, then the Lady Owls are definitely on the hunt. The season opener, on August 18th, hosting Upperman brought the first win and clean sheet of the journey. Smith County handed Upperman an 8-0 loss. Smith County returns with talent from front to back. Goalkeeper Catie Belle McCarter recorded her first clean sheet of the season. She was helped in the task by her back line of defenders who are showing great chemistry. The Lady owls’ midfield, led by Senior Chloe Gill, is blue collar grit and they come to work. Up front Smith County is completed by a line of multipurpose strikers, led by Senior Aubree Spain. The first half brought two goals from the Lady Owls. The first at seven minutes in with Kylie Chiapperini scoring with an assist by Aubree Spain. The second goal came from Matty Walker, again assisted by Spain. Two goals was great but it took that first half to shake first game nerves. Smith County would then blow up the second half. Seven minutes into the second half Aubree Spain would take the lead with an assist from Matty Walker. Seven minutes later Spain would score her second, this time assisted by Julie Bowker. One minute after that fourth goal, Kara Brooks netted the fifth unanswered goal of the game and set the clock to continuous roll. Four minutes later Kara Brooks would assist the sixth goal scored by her sister Kylee Brooks. Smith County was on fire because less than a minute later Matty Walker would take down the keeper for her second and the teams seventh goal of the game. With ten minutes let on the clock the eighth and final goal of the game would come off the foot of Kara Brooks, her second of the night, assisted by Julie Bowker. Smith County started the season with a statement by doubling the score over Upperman after beating them 4-0 at their house last season. Smith County: 8 Goals, 6 Assists, 51 Shots, 22 Shots on Goal Smith County Lady Owls played their second game of the season on Thursday August 20th at home versus Springfield. Last time these two met it ended in a draw. The Yellow Jackets are a 2A team and were coming off a win against Northeast. Smith County knew this game would be a test. The Lady Owls would however have a beautiful game, showing their grit and determination, as well as skill. Senior Goalkeeper Catie Belle McCarter would once again keep a clean sheet. The defenders played strong, being made up of a starting line of Mattie West, Lexie White, Kasie Thomas and Becca Reed. Springfield played tough and it was a fun game to watch. The Lady Owls adapted quickly to the opponent’s style of play and the midfield battled at every turn. This was a display of toughness and power from every Lady Owl. The scoring started just five minutes into the game with a PK taken by Matty Walker. With 24 minutes left in the half, Walker would pick up the second goal for herself and the team. The third goal ten minutes later would come from the Brooks sisters. Kylee scored with an assist from Kara. The second half was dominated by Smith County but only saw two more goals. Halfway through Aubree Spain would score assisted by Courtney Haley. Five minutes later the Lady Owls were awarded a free kick taken between the box and half line by Aubree Spain. She sent the ball up top just over the Keeper’s reach into the back of the net. One of the prettiest goals we’ve seen. Smith County is now 2-0 on the season and will next play at home against Goodpasture on Tuesday August 25 at 6 PM.
