We had five games in the Cubs‘ minor league system on Sunday, with Myrtle Beach having the honor of playing a doubleheader after weather issues this weekend. Iowa and South Bend each picked up wins in tight matchups, while Knoxville and Myrtle Beach both lost, including two for the Pelicans. Let’s recap it.

Triple-A Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs came away with a close 4-2 win over the Toledo Mud Hens (Tigers) in their series. finale on Sunday. The game was scoreless through the first four innings thanks to some great pitching. Braxton Garrett was very good after a few bad outings recently. Garrett tossed five scoreless frames with just two hits and a walk allowed to go along with seven strikeouts.

In the top of the fifth, the Cubs took the game’s first lead. With two outs and a runner on third, Justin Dean had the green light on a 3-0 count and singled to right field, scoring Jackson Cluff to make it a 1-0 lead. Fast forward to the seventh with the score still 1-0, Matt Shaw stepped up to the plate and ripped a two-out double to left field, scoring Ed Howard to increase the Cubs’ advantage to 2-0. The next batter, Chas McCormick, broke the game open with a two-run blast to center, giving Iowa a 4-0 lead.

Things got a little hairy in the bottom of the eighth. The Mud Hens got the first two batters of the inning on base, but Jayden Murray was able to limit the damage to just two runs, and Iowa would hang on for the 4-2 win.

Double-A Knoxville Smokies

The Knoxville Smokies fell behind early against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (Marlins) and couldn’t quite complete the comeback attempt. Dawson Netz was on the mound for Knoxville and had a bit of a rough go. Netz allowed three runs in his three innings of work. Two of those came in the bottom of the second on a two-run homer, and the last came in the third on an RBI groundout.

In the top of the fourth, Miguel Useche got the Smokies on the board with a solo homer, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Then, in the sixth, an Andy Garriola groundout brought in a second Smokies run, making it a one-run ballgame. However, the Blue Wahoos would get that run right back in the bottom of the sixth on a solo homer off Tyler Schlaffer. Knoxville got that run back in the top of the seventh on an Alex Ramírez bases-loaded walk. But with the bases loaded and one out, the Smokies couldn’t plate another run, which proved to be a costly missed opportunity.

Knoxville got a runner on in the eighth, and in the ninth they got the tying run to second base with no outs, but again couldn’t bring the tying run in, and they fell 4-3.

High-A South Bend Cubs

South Bend pulled off a win in dramatic fashion on Sunday afternoon, walking off the West Michigan Whitecaps for a 3-2 victory. The Cubs struck first in the bottom of the third on a Michael Hallquist sac fly, then the teams traded runs in the fourth, with South Bend’s run coming on another sac fly, this time from Gueri Lubo.

On the mound for the Cubs was Anhuar Garcia, who was very sharp, allowing just one run through five innings. He struck out four, walked none, and allowed three hits. Noah Edders took over for Garcia in the sixth, and while he was solid through his three innings, a wild pitch in the seventh allowed the Whitecaps to tie the game at 2-2, and the score would stay that way until the ninth.

In the ninth, with Jose Escobar on first, Josiah Hartshorn ripped a single that moved Escobar to third. The next batter, Angel Cepeda, walked things off with a single of his own, scoring Escobar and giving South Bend the 3-2 win.

Low-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Pelicans dropped both games in their doubleheader with the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (Astros). Myrtle Beach jumped out to an early lead, scoring on a wild pitch in the second inning to make it 1-0. But Fayetteville got to starter Riely Hunsaker for two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. The Pelicans got one back in the bottom of the fifth on a Juan Cabada RBI double, but the Woodpeckers would add two more in the seventh and cruise to a 6-2 win.

The second game was close for most of the way until the end. Freddy Rodriguez tossed five innings and allowed two runs – one in the first and another in the fourth.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Caden Sorrell got the Pelicans on the board with a solo homer, cutting the deficit to 2-1. The score stayed that way until the sixth, but that is unfortunately where the Woodpeckers pulled away. They got to Jhon Cabral for four runs in that inning, increasing the advantage to 6-1 over Myrtle Beach, which is how this one ended.
