A third film in the Sicario series looks to be in the offing – with star Josh Brolin confirming the news in a recent interview.
Speaking with ScreenRant, the actor revealed that another instalment "is happening" and that it looked like production would be getting under way on the project "soon", although he did not offer a more exact timeline.
Brolin had previously revealed during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast last year that the possibility of a third film was "very, very real", and it looks like it's getting even closer to materialising.
The first two films – both penned by Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan – were released in 2015 and 2018 respectively, with Brolin starring as CIA officer Matt Graver in both movies.
The first entry was helmed by Dune and future James Bond director Denis Villeneuve, with Emily Blunt and Benicio del Toro leading the cast alongside Brolin, and the film receiving significant critical acclaim including three Oscar nominations.
The second – subtitled Day of the Soldado – saw Stefano Sollima take over directorial duties, with del Toro and Brolin both returning, although it wasn't quite so well received – sitting at 62% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes compared to 91% for the original.
View Green Video on the source websiteIt's not clear who might direct this next instalment – although given Villeneuve's busy schedule it's unlikely he would make a return – while it's not yet been confirmed that Sheridan will again be penning the script, but that seems probable.
We'll be looking out for any further updates about who else might be attached, including the potential for some new big name cast members.
Brolin can next be seen in Ridley Scott's upcoming post-apocalyptic film The Dog Stars and survival thriller Whalefall, while recent credits include Weapons, Wake Up Dead Man and The Running Man.
Sicario and Sicario: Day of the Soldado are both currently streaming on ITVX.
