Originally penned as a love song, songwriter Gwen Stefani completely rewrote the song “Don’t Speak” following her messy breakup with No Doubt’s bass player, Tony Kanal. Kanal and Stefani had been together for more than seven years before splitting in 1994. What started as a more upbeat, almost 70s inspired track written predominantly by Gwen’s brother, Eric Stefani, became a moodier, minor version of the track when Gwen took over.
Released in November of 1996, “Don’t Speak” immediately generated quite a bit of airplay and radio attention, leading the single to become the most widely played song on American radio for the entirety of 1996.
“Don’t Speak” shot to number one on Billboard’s Hot 100 Airplay chart and remained there for 16 non-consecutive weeks, which was a record at the time. However, the song never hit the actual Billboard Hot 100 because it was not a commercial, physical single in the United States, which was a requirement for Hot 100 eligibility at the time. Critics have hypothesized that had a physical single of “Don’t Speak” been released, it absolutely would have become a Hot 100 number-one hit.
In the United States, “Don’t Speak” went triple platinum. The song did the same in New Zealand and went double platinum in Norway and Australia. On charts outside the United States, the song topped the rankings in Australia, Canada, Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, securing the single as No Doubt’s most successful international single.
At the 40th annual Grammy Awards, “Don’t Speak” was nominated for Song of the Year and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
When Blender Magazine ranked the “The 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born” for release, the publication placed “Don’t Speak” at number 495.
