With over 100 private and county-owned Flock Safety cameras spread throughout Tuscaloosa, some students have begun to worry that these cameras are invading their privacy, rather than keeping them safe.
In late 2022, Flock cameras started to become visible in the Tuscaloosa community and have since spread throughout the broader Tuscaloosa and Northport areas. The Tuscaloosa Police Department owns 19 of these cameras, and the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office owns 30.
Many local businesses and neighborhood homeowners associations also have cameras installed in the area.
Assistant Superintendent of Operations for Tuscaloosa City Schools Deron Cameron said that “safety is always at the forefront of the decisions” made in their facilities when addressing the plan to add new cameras in Tuscaloosa schools’ parking lots.
Tuscaloosa City School Board finalized an agreement with Alabama Power to install 16 non- Flock-branded multi-sensor security cameras at Central High School, Northridge High School, Paul W. Bryant High School, Tuscaloosa Career and Technology Academy and the TCS Central Office.
The proposal for the new cameras is labeled “Phase 1-5 Locations” and has left many people questioning what other phases could look like, and whether these cameras will be actively monitoring students and staff or used as reviewing devices after an incident occurs.
Similarly, the Flock Safety system can record where vehicles are at certain times and places, read license plate numbers, identify different car characteristics, “help authorized users find relevant vehicle evidence” and help provide leads and other evidence for investigators.
While these devices are put into place to help solve crimes and keep the community safe, some citizens believe that the cameras are an invasion of their privacy.
Kharlis Cooper, a sophomore from Tuscaloosa, said these cameras are tracking license plates and can “find out who you are and can follow you over state lines, not just in Tuscaloosa County.”
While Flock Safety cameras are not able to identify faces, some believe that they can track people based on the license plate numbers and car details that they collect.
“I truthfully don’t understand how Flock cameras are making us safe,” Cooper said. “Every business and building already has cameras. These Flock cameras are just a step up into our privacy.”
