Lando Norris produced the sort of qualifying lap that leaves little room for modesty – and even less for lifting off.
The McLaren driver snatched pole position for the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, edging Mercedes’ George Russell by just 0.102 seconds in a breathless finale that was complicated by a late sprinkling of rain.
It was Norris’ second consecutive pole after his qualifying triumph at the Hungarian Grand Prix, putting the reigning world champion in prime position to chase another back-to-back victory.
Yet the Briton was hardly convinced he had produced a flawless masterpiece. Instead, he suggested the decisive ingredient was simply having the nerve to attack every corner as if the consequences no longer mattered.
“I don't know how much the rain affected things. Certainly the lap time was a bit better than I expected, and honestly, it maybe just cooled the track a little bit and actually the tyres performed a bit better through the lap,” he explained.
“I wouldn't say it affected anything in a bad way. Only my Turn 1 was pretty shocking. It was pretty much my worst Turn 1 of the weekend. Otherwise it wasn't a lap that felt mega.

“It was just one where I just had to commit to everything because I knew how close it was going to be. We saw how close it was after Q3 run one.
“It was one where I just kind of committed a lot more and almost made more mistakes, but because I committed a lot more through some of these mistakes, I seemed to gain more than I seemed to lose at times.
“It’s always hard to know because I don't know my deltas, so I don't know where I went quicker or slower. But it was a lap where I just thought, ‘I have nothing to lose’ and it paid off. Those are also nice laps to have.”
When bravery beats perfection
Norris’ pole was all the more notable given McLaren’s struggles in the slower corners.
After finishing third in the sprint, he had openly admitted that the team’s low-speed performance was “nowhere near good enough”, leaving little indication that the MCL40 would suddenly become a qualifying rocket ship.
It didn't.
Instead, Norris simply wrung everything he could from the car where it was strongest – and then offered a wonderfully cheeky explanation for the result.
“We've not changed those things. Our car is certainly the best in high speed, no doubt. Or I have the biggest balls, I don't know,” Norris said with a smile.
“But it's very, very strong there and those low speed we just really still struggle too much to be confident about everything. We definitely made maybe a little bit of progress, but it's still going to be the trickier side of things tomorrow.”
Same weaknesses, one spectacular lap
Norris was equally clear that the qualifying heroics had not magically cured McLaren’s underlying problems. The car remained difficult in precisely the areas that had frustrated him earlier in the weekend.
“Certainly the car didn't feel that much better in the places we were struggling. Our biggest losses were still the same places, the same corners as it was this morning,” he said.

That leaves Norris with pole, but hardly a trouble-free Sunday ahead. The McLaren may have the speed to fly around Zandvoort’s faster sections, but its low-speed weaknesses could still make the race considerably less comfortable.
For now, though, Norris can enjoy the luxury of having taken pole by throwing caution to the wind – and, by his own wonderfully blunt assessment, perhaps possessing the biggest balls in the paddock.
