Nick Pivetta was placed on the 15-day injured list on April 13 due to a flexor strain, and the Padres right-hander has yet to return to action. Friday marked the 131st consecutive day of Pivetta’s IL stint, which has now triggered a contract clause that gives the Padres some flexibility in walking away from the two years and $32MM remaining on Pivetta’s deal.
The righty signed a four-year, $55MM free agent deal with San Diego in February 2025 that broke down as $23MM in guaranteed money over the first two years, and Pivetta then had the ability to opt out after the second and third years of the contract. Pivetta was owed $14MM in 2027 and $18MM in 2028 under the original terms, yet a clause was included in the event that Pivetta spent at least 130 consecutive days on the IL in 2025 or 2026 due to a specific type of injury.
This ongoing elbow issue fits the criteria, and so now Pivetta’s $14MM player option for 2027 has become a $14MM club option for the Padres, with no buyout. Should San Diego decline that club option at season’s end, Pivetta will become a free agent.
Of course, nothing is stopping either side from discussing a new contract in the interim, as the Padres still hold exclusive negotiating rights with Pivetta until the free agent period officially opens in November. Given the circumstances, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a new arrangement worked out, assuming the Padres are feeling good about Pivetta’s health. Pivetta would surely be open to a multi-year deal in the wake of his mostly lost 2026 season, while the Padres will have holes to fill in a rotation full of impending free agents, and pitchers on mutual options or player options (most notably Michael King, who seems likely to opt out of the final two years and $58MM of his contract).
There’s also the possibility that the Padres simply exercise that $14MM option to retain Pivetta through 2027. That would address one spot in next year’s rotation while giving San Diego more time to gauge Pivetta’s health. At the very least, the Padres have gained some financial flexibility, which is no small matter for a club with so many other hefty long-term deals on the books.
Of course, the story of Pivetta’s 2026 season still isn’t fully written, as the righty tossed two innings in a bridge league game yesterday. Pivetta began a minor league rehab assignment at the start of August but was pulled in the first inning of his first rehab outing on August 4 due to some elbow discomfort. Despite that seemingly ominous situation, Pivetta felt good enough to throw a bullpen session later that same day, and he has continued throwing in the interim before getting back to game action.
Pivetta will need to make multiple rehab appearances given his long layoff, and it isn’t a guarantee that he’ll make it back at all before the Padres’ season is over (either in the regular season or in the playoffs). Given the lack of time remaining on the baseball calendar, San Diego could aim to bring Pivetta back as a reliever so he’d require less build-up for his arm, and the Padres would have yet another weapon within their already stacked bullpen.
