Students packed into the crowd at University Program’s “Bama Jam” Thursday night, singing along to familiar lyrics, dancing with friends and waiting for the entrance of the night’s headliner, Soulja Boy.
The atmosphere began building even before the performances. Students arrived with friends, took photos and gathered around the event as music played throughout the night.

For Daylynn Bass-Francis, a sophomore nursing major, seeing others dressed like her made the anticipation more profound for the performance. Bass-Francis said her favorite part of the night was dressing the part during the event.
“He is just so fresh to death. I mean, it’s Soulja Boy,” she said. “The vibes are just so cool and laid back.”
The performance was the center of the night, but community was also a prevalent surprise for attendees. Ella Sloane, a freshman majoring in business, said she enjoyed seeing the turnout and enthusiasm from students.
“It was just super cool to see how the community comes together in a different space,” Sloane said. “It was really good.”
Sloane said she was able to connect with other students at the event as a new student on campus this year.
“It really made me excited for the year, and getting to meet new people was so great,” she said.
As Soulja Boy came onto the stage, the crowd responded almost immediately, turning the performance into a shared moment among students. His entrance brought a new wave of energy to the crowd, as students cheered and sang along to songs that have become familiar across generations.
Jessica Lindsey, a sophomore nursing major, said this experience was something that reminded her of her childhood. She said she felt connected to all her friends through their shared love of Soulja Boy.
“We were all dancing, dressed up and laughing,” Lindsey said. “I feel like I will never forget this Bama Jam.”
