Former Georgia RB Nick Chubb announces retirement after 8 NFL seasons

Nick Chubb is hanging up his cleats.

Chubb announced Friday night via social media that he is retiring from football. An All-SEC running back at Georgia, Chubb played 8 seasons in the NFL.

“Today’s the day I’ve been avoiding for a while,” Chubb wrote in a multi-page note posted on Instagram. “Twelve-year-old me could never imagine this day, and 30-year-old me is wondering where all the time has gone.

“I’ve known for some time now, but I’m finally ready to share that I’m done playing football. I wanted to end my career on a healthy note, along with a winning season, and I was able to do that.”

Chubb spent 7 of his 8 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. He joined the Houston Texans for the 2025 season.

The Browns drafted Chubb with the No. 35 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. During his time in Cleveland, Chubb was selected to 4 straight Pro Bowls from 2019-22. He was named All-Pro in 2022, putting up the best numbers of his career with 302 carries for 1,525 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Chubb was limited to 2 games in 2023 after suffering a serious injury to the same knee that was injured during his 2015 season at Georgia. The ’23 injury kept him out of the start of the 2024 season, in which he played 8 games before suffering a broken foot in Week 15.

With the Texans, Chubb played in 15 games, starting 9. He had 122 carries, up from his injury-shortened final two seasons in Cleveland, but lower than the 190-300 carries during his first five seasons. Houston, though, did let Chubb finish his career by playing in his first postseason games since 2020.

Chubb retires having played in 100 regular-season NFL games with 87 starts. He rushed 1,462 times for 7,349 yards (5 yards per carry) and 54 touchdowns.
