Operation BBQ Relief, a group dedicated to feeding communities after disasters, believes there is healing power in food.
The volunteer-based organization was in northwest Indiana on Friday, cooking for some people facing some challenging times.
“Anytime a disaster strikes, wherever it may be, we are there, ready to go. We have volunteers in every state,” said Steve Anderson with Operation BBQ Relief. “We were in Portage a couple days ago. I handed this woman a hot meal. She looked at me with tears in her eyes. She said, ‘This is the first hot meal I have had in days.’ So that is why we do what we do.”
Operation BBQ Relief has provided thousands of meals for people in Portage, Lake Station, Schererville and now Gary.
Houston-based rapper and philanthropist Trae Tha Truth flew in earlier this week after seeing stories about Gary on the news.
“I called my brother and my team, two hours later, jumped on a flight, flew into Chicago and hit the ground working,” he said. “We are giving people real, hot meals, not crackers and Lunchables. We are giving them meals we would eat.”
When he wasn’t serving people, he was working to clear debris.
“It is pretty amazing what all he did for us. Gave us food and then helping to clean up. He really cares,” said Nevaeh Fuller of Gary.
“When I leave here and go back home, there will still be lots of work to be done out here,” he said. “I hope someone sees what we are doing and it inspires them to help. That is the goal.”
