Two months after being shut down, downtown Rochester’s Wyndham Hotel is getting broken into

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Wyndham Hotel in downtown Rochester remains shut down two months after the city found nearly two dozen fire and building code violations, and now the hotel is dealing with break-ins.

News10NBC’s Garrett Chan found the main entrance boarded up, along with windows and doors all around the building. Several of the windows have been smashed in recent weeks, and two Rochester police cars were camped out in front.

Behind the building, construction crews were placing metal panels and wooden boards. The city shut down the hotel back in June after inspectors found emergency exits blocked up, along with more than 70 portable air conditioning units instead of a functional central air conditioning system. The fire marshal said it was an electrical hazard.

“We need to have hotel rooms in our city and we need hotels that are operating in a way that will allow patrons that want to be able to stay there. So we would like to see these things fixed ASAP as we said in our statement and when they get them fixed the hotel will be able to be open back up,” Mayor Evans said in June.

Chan spoke with someone from the management company called in by investors to save the hotel. He said they tried to support the current owner of the hotel, Nayan Patel, to get it back up to code. He said they stepped away from the project around the time the city ordered the hotel to shut down.

Chan spoke with people downtown, and many said they were not aware of the recent break-ins or the hotel being shut down. One person said they don’t want to see the building end up like the Rochester Riverside Hotel across the Genesee.

News10NBC reached out to Patel by email and the city for comment.
