PITTSFORD, N.Y. — Work on the Interstate 490 bridge project is running ahead of schedule this year, with crews aiming to reopen the westbound side by Thanksgiving.
Todd Bernessel, the engineer in charge of the project, said the westbound side is about a month ahead of last year’s timeline, when work stretched into December. News10NBC’s Adelisa Badzic went out to the construction site and spoke with Brennessel as crews set short girders on the south side of the canal.
“Right now on the westbound side we’re probably about a month ahead of that schedule,” Brennessel said.
Crews will begin night work next week to set the center spans. Drivers should expect lane reductions on the westbound side starting around 6 p.m., with traffic reduced to a single lane.
“Please be courteous to us out here, be safe, be smart, pay attention to what you’re doing and hopefully we can all go home in the morning,” Brennessel said.
The project has filled in about 80 feet of space around the canal while removing piers, creating a more open appearance. Brenessel said people walking the trail have complimented the work.
Brennessel said the credit belongs to his team.
“If it wasn’t for them, it wouldn’t look so nice. I mean they’re the ones that are out in the field in the trenches so they they’re the ones that really deserve all the credit along with the contractors.”
The canal bridge remains the critical path for the project. Crews plan to complete steel work next week, followed by a deck pour in early October. Blacktop work is scheduled for September and early October.
Brennessel said severe weather this year had minimal impact, thanks to drainage improvements completed last year. Some windstorms brought down trees that crews had to address.
Work will continue into next year, but Brennessel said most of it will involve lane closures during the day and possibly some night work. He does not expect more lane shifts next year.
