Summer isn’t over yet, and there are still holiday bargains to snap up. Look to Wales for cost-effective, self-catering stays with a hot tub, consider Southern Italy for affordable, last-minute sun and seek out cruises for all-inclusive value.
“We have seen a notable rise in demand for late deals this summer, with savings of up to £700 on selected holidays and thousands of free child places still available,” a spokesperson for independent travel agency Hays Travel tells The i Paper.
“Spain, Greece and Turkey remain firm favourites, while late cruise deals are also proving popular for their value. For flexible travellers, there are still great [deals] to be found for late summer, September, and October half term.”
Ashley Quint, director of Berkhamsted travel agency, TravelTime World, also highlights cruises as offering value for money when compared with hotels of a similar standard.
“It’s always possible to find great value if you don’t follow the crowd,” he says. “In Italy, for example, I’d be heading to Calabria (instead of Puglia or Sicily), which is now more accessible than it used to be (thanks to direct flights from the UK run by Tui and Ryanair), and Tropea, a beach town on the Tyrrhenian Sea, is a delight.”
Quint’s approach can also work for UK breaks. Visit Britain’s latest research into Britons’ domestic holiday plans was released on Thursday. Its monthly survey shows that South West England is the most-preferred UK destination for overnight trips in August or September, while Northern Ireland, North East England and the West Midlands are in less demand – so that’s where to look for cheaper breaks. Here are seven bargain breaks to book now. Availability was correct at the time of writing.
