Doctor Who icon Tom Baker confirmed for all-new Sherlock Holmes adventure

After two successful previous outings as the character, Doctor Who legend Tom Baker is reprising his role as Sherlock Holmes, in the third Sir Sherlock audio drama.

The new adventure will be titled Sir Sherlock: The Parting Shot, and will also see Doctor Who's K9 star John Leeson reprising his role as Dr John Watson.

It has been written by Gary Hopkins, and will see Holmes and Watson exploring a film set. It was originally intended as the capper to a Sir Sherlock trilogy, but plans have now changed, and more adventures could be on the way beyond this.

The synopsis says: "Now that Sir Sherlock and Doctor Watson have returned to 221B Baker Street, there has been renewed interest in their stories by the most modern of entertainments: the motion picture. Whilst visiting the set of a film, Watson witnesses what appears to be a tragic accident.

"Holmes, Watson, Norton and Sergeant Emily Lestrade are drawn into the world of the movies to discover that show business is, indeed, like no business they know. Should they keep the culprit from the gallows? What does the case have to do with a villain from their past? And who will still be standing when the credits roll?"

The project is now live on Kickstarter here, where fans can pre-order it until 17 September. It became fully funded in its first four hours of being available.

Meanwhile, an official novelisation is also available to pre-order in paperback and hardback, which has been adapted from Hopkins's script by Kenton Hall.

Hopkins said in a statement: "The Parting Shot was originally the third of only three audio plays planned for the run, until it became apparent that the series could continue for a little longer. It therefore represents an ending and a beginning for Sherlock Holmes, in a story featuring some faces both old and new."

Joining Baker and Leeson in the drama will be Doctor Who's Ace star Sophie Aldred as Lady Vanadia Vallance, who said in a statement: "When I was asked to join such an illustrious cast in such a soon-to-be classic series, I couldn’t believe my luck. Such fun, such a lovely part and such a talented group of actors. What could be better?!"

Cast regulars Katy Ashworth and Nicholas Rowe will also be back as Emily Lestrade and Norton respectively, while the late Norman Eshley appears posthumously as Lord Lestrade. Wink Taylor, Conrad Westmaas and producer/director Barnaby Eaton-Jones round out the cast.

Two previous Sir Sherlock adventures were released earlier this year, with the first being titled Sir Sherlock: The Red Letter Day and the second being Sir Sherlock: The Sickle and the Sea.

Sir Sherlock: The Parting Shot is available to pre-order now, with CDs and official novelisations available via Kickstarter.
