Former India National Cricket Team opener Wasim Jaffer said in one of his YouTube channel videos that it would be a wrong move if Rishabh Pant considers a captaincy role again in the Indian Premier League.
Pant was the captain of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the past two seasons, where he and Lucknow both failed massively. Ahead of the IPL 2027 season, in a significant move, the Sanjeev Goenka-owned LSG traded out Rishabh Pant to the Delhi Capitals and brought in the experienced spinner Kuldeep Yadav from the Delhi-based franchise.
A couple of seasons ago, Pant joined hands with the Super Giants as the highest-paid cricketer of the league, creating history. The balloon that went high in the air came down soon to the ground as the Pant-led Lucknow Super Giants were unable to perform according to their true potential.
In the previous seasons, they finished tenth in the ten-team points table. After the disappointing season, it was almost confirmed that the franchise would decide on Rishabh Pant. Ultimately, weeks after the conclusion of the IPL 2026 season, the keeper-batter joined the Delhi Capitals for INR 15 crore while Kuldeep Yadav joined LSG for INR 13.50 crore.
Wasim Jaffer suggests Rishabh Pant revive his batting form in IPL 2027
In 2025, during the mega auction, Rishabh Pant joined LSG for a whopping price tag of INR 27 crore. Wasim Jaffer noted that over the last two seasons, there was a massive dip in Pant's individual performance.
Because of poor performance, he is currently out of India's T20I and ODI schemes. On his official YouTube channel, Wasim Jaffer Official, the former batter said that to revive his form, the dynamic batter needs to perform as a regular player, free from any leadership role in the IPL 2027 while he will be playing for the Delhi Capitals. Jaffer feared that extra burdens could bar Rishabh Pant from playing his actual game.
Wasim Jaffer explains why Rishabh Pant should stay away from Delhi Capitals' captaincy role
To return to India's white-ball teams, the keeper-batter's primary priority should be scoring runs in the upcoming Indian Premier League season. Across the IPL 2025 and IPL 2026 seasons, the southpaw scored 581 runs in 28 matches at an average of 26.41 and a strike rate of 135.75, supported by only two half-centuries and one century.
"If Delhi Capitals even offer him the captaincy, I think he should say no. You know, the way KL has done it, he is enjoying his time as a player. There is a lot of pressure when you have to lead a franchise: the pressure from the owners, the expectations, the pressure from the fans, plus you have to focus on your own performance. On top of that, he is also a wicketkeeper and has to bat," Wasim Jaffer opined.
"I think he should play as a player because, you know, his performance has come down. Again, I feel Rishabh’s priority should be to perform well in the IPL and make his way back into the T20I and ODI teams. Captaincy is not his priority because he is not currently in India’s leadership group where he could become the captain," he added.
