These are encouraging statistics that show the real appetite for our domestic produce, and it’s likely to only grow further. Yes, English wines come with a premium price tag; this is down to a combination of factors including high cost of land, labour that’s actually paid fairly, and the fact that most wines are made on a boutique, small scale. But that price does come with an assurance of quality, and a chance to embrace the “less but better” mantra.
So this summer, as the mercury stays permanently high, why not have a wine staycation and swap your familiar tipple for an English alternative instead.

Even when not on offer, this incredibly refined wine is a steal. Made exclusively at the Leckford Estate in Hampshire, this 100 per cent Chardonnay is oozing with finesse; its fine mousse delivers layers of baked golden apples, spring-blossom honey, and a crumbly-buttery biscuit note which is so enticing. I can’t imagine a vintage Champagne delivering such quality for the price, it’s superb.
