GREECE, N.Y. — The Greece Town Board Thursday voted unanimously to end all health insurance benefits for former Deputy Town Supervisor Michelle Marini.
Last year, Marini pleaded guilty to two felonies, admitting she stole more than $1,000 from the town and used the money to renovate her home — by having contractors who were working on a town project work on her own properties on the town’s dime.
Town Supervisor Jeff McCann says it’s shocking Marini never went to prison and that justice must be done.
“We need to show people that if you think you can get away with something and you do get away with something, there’s always going to be a very real chance that you’re going to face justice and you’re going to pay a price for your misdeeds with that,” McCann said.
The town cited New York’s “Faithless Servant” doctrine for its decision. That allows businesses and local governments to recover compensation from former employees found to have committed wrongdoing during their employment.
“We’re very confident that what we’ve done here is bulletproof and if there is any type of challenge to this, we feel like we’re on very solid ground,” McCann said.
