Fine, I’ll say it.
I miss C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
In 2025, the Chicago Bears picked up the veteran defensive back off the waiver wire, hoping he would fill a void in the secondary that no one on the active roster could. As it turns out, the Bears struck gold with CJGJ. In 10 games with the Bears, Gardner-Johnson collected 2 interceptions, 3 sacks, 5 tackles-for-loss, 5 quarterback hits, and forced a fumble. Pro Football Focus’ data says that he took at least 10 snaps last season at the following positions: Box safety, slot corner, wide corner, free safety, and on the defensive line. It was an absolute treat watching a versatile player create havoc in so many different ways.
That said, my favorite C.J. Gardner-Johnson position was general nuisance — a role he reprised during joint practices between the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns. And it only makes sense that Shedeur Sanders was the target here:
Overheard from a Bills defender: “This s*** checkdown city!”
— Daniel Oyefusi (@DanielOyefusi) August 20, 2026Bills S C.J. Gardner-Johnson not practicing but talking all kinds of smack. Earlier he was yelling "Check-down King" in the direction of Sanders on the sideline.

When I saw the tweets roll in, I immediately wondered if this was part of a carryover from when C.J. Gardner-Johnson and the Bears put the clamps on Shedeur Sanders and the Browns at Soldier Field last season. On a frigid Sunday afternoon in December, Sanders completed just 18 of 35 passes, threw for 177 yards, didn’t throw a touchdown pass, was intercepted three times, took five sacks, and took 15 quarterback hits. It all added up to a 30.3 passer rating and a woeful 6.5 QBR.
I still can’t believe that guy was named to the Pro Bowl.
Browns QB Shedeur Sanders is brought down by Bears LB D’Marco Jackson on a day that I’m sure C.J. Gardner-Johnson remembers well. Matt Marton-Imagn ImagesAs for Gardner-Johnson’s line, it was business as usual for the versatile defensive back. CJGJ finished with 4 total tackles (3 solo), 1 tackle-for-loss, 2 passes defended, and 1 interception. Yeah, I’d bet a dollar to a donut that game was on Gardner-Johnson’s mind when he was taunting Sanders. And, frankly, I love it.
Don’t get me wrong. I like what the Bears did to rebuild their secondary. Unfortunately, injuries have the team pivoting right now and trying some new things. It makes me wish Garnder-Johnson was back in the fold. Still, it will be fun to follow his exploits from afar this season. And I look forward to seeing how he plays against the Bears when they visit the Bills in December.
