BROCKPORT, N.Y. — Over the past decade, SUNY Brockport has been the best college football team in the Greater Rochester area, and there’s one main reason for that: the man in charge.
A rainy start to practice on the eighth day of SUNY Brockport’s camp, two senior leaders approached me and talked about how this year, so far, has been their most fun camp yet. They talked about camaraderie, living in the dorms, and this being their final year playing football. They also talked about their head coach.
“He’s great,” said senior linebacker Darius Cervi.
“Coach is great,” said senior offensive lineman Liam Malgieri. “He’s a very good coach, he knows exactly what he’s talking about.”

“I always want to just run through a wall from every single speech he gives,” Cervi said.
He’s the sermonizer of SUNY.
“He can really get you fired up,” Malgieri said.

“I don’t know if I can replicate it honestly,” Cervi said when asked if he could tell us a line.

Well, kinda, sorta. I mean, look it depends on who you ask.
“I don’t know if they’re that great, but if they say that, they’re probably just being very kind at this point,” Mangone said, sheepishly shaking his head when asked about his notorious speeches.
Admittedly, I have yet to hear the musings of Mangone, but the tale is in the tape. In 12 years at the helm, Mangone has compiled a 96-38 record and won three Empire State championships. This team might be the fourth.
“I think we’ve had the greatest team in terms of just the bonding. I think our best teams we’ve had over the years have been the closest. And there’s a lot of other things. You have to have talent and so forth. But if you’re not close, it won’t work,” Mangone said.
And in terms of that talent, the defense brings attitude. “You gotta be violent” could be heard during a team drill. While on offense, the team feels confident at every position.
“Honestly, I’m just excited that I’m on the offense because that means that we get to put up points,” Malgieri bragged.
So the tools are seemingly there. The Golden Eagles were second in the Empire 8 with both 39.1 points per game on offense, and 17.1 points allowed. Starting quarterback Ben Gocella enters his season year after an 18-touchdown season in 2025. So the aforementioned camaraderie is there alongside the talent needed to succeed, what’s a successful year look like?
“Definitely a championship and a post run,” Cervi said.
“Definitely an Empire 8 Championship, deep postseason run,” Malgieri said.
But for Jason Mangone, the 96 win man at Brockport, that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
“The promise that I made to myself and others is that we want to win a national championship. And until that’s done, I’m not going to be satisfied. And if we get one and hopefully that does happen, and come soon, that it’s about getting the next,” Mangone said when asked what’s kept him at the college after a decade-plus of success.
The Golden Eagles will start their season on Thursday, Sept. 3 against Buffalo State at home.
