A local court in Jammu has directed J&K Police to start a preliminary investigation to find out whether the allegations are true or not. Sub-Judge and Special Railway Magistrate Sandeep Singh Sen directed the Nowabad Police in Jammu and Kashmir to start an inquiry and submit a report to the court. The court directed the police to submit the investigation report by or before September 3, 2026.
"SHO police station Nowabad, Jammu is directed to conduct a preliminary inquiry into the matter and submit its report before this court by or before September 3, 2026,” the judge said in the order.
The allegations went to court after Sudershan Mehta, a former deputy superintendent of police and former Joint Honorary Secretary of the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association, filed a complaint against the BCCI president. Mehta, in his complaint, claimed that Mithun Manhas fabricated his date of birth to fetch advantage at the national junior cricket level. Sudershan Mehta accused Manhas of fraud, cheating and forgery and approached the court to register an FIR under Section 175(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.

However, the court directed the police to conduct a preliminary investigation instead of instant action against the BCCI president.
"I have perused the application and other material annexed with the application, and as per the provisions of BNSS, before lodging or registering any cognizable offence by the concerned police, preliminary inquiry has to be conducted, the magistrate said in the report.
Mehta, in his complaint, also claimed that by providing false statements and fabricated personal information, including the date of birth, Mithun Manhas had committed criminal offences.
