“It’s bulls**t,” one Wolverhampton Wanderers supporter tells The i Paper. “It was such an easy win.”
“They’ve fumbled it,” says another, while for good measure a third calls it “utter woke nonsense… soft as s**t”.
So, woke nonsense or perfectly sane? You be the judge…
You may not know the song by its name, “The Liquidator”, but most football fans will recognise the reggae instrumental tune instantly.
Chelsea play it before kick-off at Stamford Bridge, and while other clubs in England and Scotland have adopted it as well, nowhere is the history of this song by Jamaican band Harry J Allstars more complicated than in the Black Country.
There, in the early 2000s, both West Bromwich Albion and Wolves were asked to stop playing it by local police because of the obscenities both sets of supporters would sing during it.
“F**k off Wanderers, West Brom!” or “F**k off West Brom, we’re Wolves!” – depending on your side of the divide.
But while West Brom have since reinstated the song, in a season where the two sides will meet in the Championship, Wolves have opted against bringing it back.
“I respect what The Liquidator means to many Wolves supporters and its place in the history of Molineux, but we also have a responsibility to make decisions based on where the club is today and the standards we expect around our matchday environment,” Wolves executive chairman Nathan Shi said.
Wolves’ statement added that the club had been sanctioned by the Football Association for mass discriminatory chanting in recent seasons, and therefore “does not believe it would be appropriate to reintroduce a song which has historically prompted mass offensive chanting at Molineux”.
For a club that have been spiralling for years, resulting in a relegation from the Premier League last season that became inevitable, reintroducing the song felt like a simple chance to get supporters back on side.
“Straight away I just sighed,” Wolves supporter Ryan Gill tells The i Paper.
“It’s ‘utter woke nonsense’ and we’ve missed an open goal. I’m not sure how telling another club to f**k off is discriminating but that’s today’s world we live in… soft as s**t.”
His brother Joe Gill adds: “The one chance they get to bring the whole stadium together and bring fans back on side and they’ve fumbled it. We sing ‘F**k VAR!’ every week and even sung it last week against Blackburn when it wasn’t even in use.
“They had the easiest tap in to get that ground up for any game and missed out, I guess we will just have to out sing them lot down the road in February when it’s played at their place.”
The Gills aren’t alone in this view. “It makes the higher-ups at Molineux look weak and unwilling to listen to the fans, which is nothing new with this current ownership,” supporter Rob Morris adds.

And playing devil’s advocate, Wolves are hardly going to rush reintroducing a song that encourages obscenities during chants – a sentence that is admittedly hard to finish typing without laughing, knowing free will and other chants exist.
And while this decision may appear mountain-from-molehill material if you are outside the Black Country, you need only read the replies to Wolves’ X statement on the matter to gauge just how at odds the club are with their own fans.
