Amid the off-season trade rumours involving multiple Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises, former Team India opener Aakash Chopra ranked all of the ten franchises based on their performances between the 2021 and 2026 seasons. Chopra's rankings came with a few surprising calls, as he denied Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) the No.1 spot.
Aakash Chopra's rankings are mostly dependent on the teams' overall performances within the above-mentioned time span. More than winning the IPL title, the former cricketer prefers to rank the teams with the win percentage as his primary parameter alongside the number of times the team qualified for the play-offs.
In his official YouTube video channel, 'Aakash Chopra', the former India cricketer ranked the Gujarat Titans higher than any other IPL team because of their win percentage. The winner of the IPL 2022 season has a win percentage of 59.49, which influenced Chopra to rank them No.1 in his rankings.
"The team at No. 1 has won only one trophy, but they have played three finals. In their five-year history, they have qualified four times and played three finals. The team is the Gujarat Titans. Their win percentage is 59.49," Aakash Chopra said in his YouTube video.
Chopra placed RCB at the second position, after Gujarat Titans, because of a difference in win percentages. While Gujarat's win percentage is 59.49. RCB's is 58.69 despite winning two IPL titles in back-to-back seasons.
"The current champions are at No. 2, which means the team that has lifted two consecutive trophies, and that's RCB. They have qualified for the playoffs five times in the previous six years. Their win percentage is 58.69, which is just behind the Gujarat Titans," the former batter continued.
The third pick was more interesting as it was Delhi Capitals, the team which is yet to win their maiden league trophy. But, as they have 50 percent wins, Akash Chopra kept them after Gujarat Titans and RCB.
"The team at No. 3 is going to slightly shock you because they haven't won even one trophy. If you have won exactly 50 percent of your matches, haven't won a trophy, and qualified for the playoffs only once in the last six years, you have a problem. This is Delhi Capitals," he added.
Rajasthan Royals are another team in the league's history who haven't won the trophy yet, but still manage to secure a win percentage of 48.35.
"You would be surprised that the team that comes next in terms of win percentage is the Rajasthan Royals. They haven't won a single trophy. They played one final in 2022 and have qualified for the playoffs three times. Their win percentage is 48.35," the former cricketer-turned-cricket expert commented.
For the following two positions, Chopra mentioned the three-time IPL winners Kolkata Knight Riders and five-time title holder Chennai Super Kings, respectively. That selection also came from the teams' win percentages and number of play-off qualifications in the past six seasons.
"The Kolkata Knight Riders come after them in terms of win percentage. They have qualified twice. They played the final in 2021 and lifted the trophy in 2024, but haven't qualified apart from that. Their win percentage is 48.31. Everyone's favorite team, the Chennai Super Kings, comes after that. Their win percentage is 47.72," he added.
Lucknow Super Giants are over Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad!
Lucknow Super Giants, who finished as the last-positioned team in the 2026 season, found themselves in seventh place in Aakash Chopra's rankings, above Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad. The cricket expert explained that only because of the win percentages, he ranked Lucknow higher than Hyderabad and Punjab.
"Then, another surprising one, the Lucknow Super Giants, because they have won 47.22 percent of their matches. They have qualified in two seasons, 2022 and 2023, but 2024 to 2026 hasn't been good. This team is above Hyderabad and Punjab in terms of win percentage. Punjab have played a final, but they come after Lucknow. Their win percentage is only 47.12. They have qualified just once. That's the other problem. They have qualified only once in six years," he explained.
"The SunRisers Hyderabad, believe it or not, their win percentage is 42.04. This is a bit of shocking news. They changed the playing approach, but have won just 42 percent of their matches. They have qualified twice for the playoffs," he added.
Mumbai Indians at the bottom-most position of Aakash Chopra's rankings
For the remaining bottommost position, Aakash Chopra picked the 5-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians, whose last few seasons were not as great as they were expected.
"Only one team is left now, the five-time champions, it's the Mumbai Indians. Their win percentage is 42.04," he stated.
